Serena Brooks – Artist Statement Continually aspiring to bring to the table something fresh, but grounded in the tradition of textile art, Serena Brooks is a fine artist, working in fabric. She uses her own hand-dyed fabrics, as well as commercially purchased and recycled fabrics, to “paint” her compositions. She then embellishes her pieces with threads and other embellishments to create added texture. Serena’s piece, “Walking on Sunshine” won Grand Prize in Benartex, Inc.’s 2008 “Piece, Love and Quilts” contest, and recently toured the country for one year at various exhibition sites. Her piece, “Digital Flowers Unleashed”, part of her pixilated series, was accepted and exhibited as a finalist at the 2008 International Quilt Festival in Houston, Texas. Additionally, one of her proudest accomplishments was to be commissioned by the League of Women Voters to create a canvas, depicting the United States, which traveled throughout the country for the entire calendar year preceding the 2008 presidential election. Serena will be exhibiting two of her recent collections at the 10 Artists / 10 Days event – several pieces from her “Tiles” textile collection and several from her “Digital” collection. When not creating art, Serena co-chairs, with her husband, Lewis, the rearing of their two children, Melody and Jesse.
